PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Chantelle Handy scored a game-high 22 points as the Thundering Herd women's basketball team took down Miami Ohio by a score of 83-76 Friday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center in the Pitt Thanksgiving Tournament.
Handy was one of five double-digit scorers for Marshall (2-3) while Courtney Osborn led Miami (1-3) with 20 points. After leading by as many as 24 points in the second half, Marshall had to fend off a late Miami rally. The RedHawks cut the lead to four in the final minutes before the Herd was able to finish off the game. The Herd shot a solid 54.5 percent in the contest while holding the RedHawks to a .393 shooting percentage. Miami was able to keep the game close thanks to its strong free throw shooting, hitting 26-of-29 attempts from the charity stripe. ![]() Marshall scorched the nets in the first half, hitting 19-31 shots, a shooting percentage of 61.3 percent. The Herd got off to a quick start, jumping out to an 11-2 lead less than three minutes into the contest. Up 6-2, Mystee Dale nailed a three-pointer before Tania Walters hit a bucket 15 seconds later to give Marshall the nine-point edge. Miami utilized a 12-6 run over the next four minutes to cut the Marshall lead to three, 17-14. Courtney Osborn hit a pair of treys to cut into the lead. Through the end of the half, it was all Herd as it took the lead to as many as 14 points, 34-20, with just over five minutes left. Tynikki Crook scored nine out of her game-leading 13 first-half points over the run. The RedHawks cut slightly into the lead, trailing by 12, 43-31, at the half. As was the case in the opening period, the Herd came out on fire in the second, starting the half on a 14-2 run to extends its lead to a game-high 24 points, 57-33. Chantelle Handy scored six points in the run as the Herd once again hit seven of its first nine shots to open the period. The RedHawks used its 73.8% free throw shooting to its advantage, embarking on a 11-1 stretch to cut the Marshall lead to 14 points, 58-44. Miami hit nine free throws in the second half, before scoring a field goal with 12:29 remaining in the game. Miami kept the pressure on, cutting the lead to single digits in the final ten minutes. A pair of free throws by Maggie Boyer cut the deficit to seven points. Following a lay-up by Handy, Boyer struck again, hitting a trey to make it a six-point game, 66-60, with six minutes left in the contest. The bucket ended what was a 26-9 RedHawk run. The Herd quickly reestablished its double-digit advantage as Tania Walters hit a pair of free throws and Crook hit her first bucket of the second half to make it a 70-60 game in favor of the Herd. Five quick points by Ashleigh Brown was followed by a three from Courtney Reed, which cut the lead down to four, 72-68, the lowest it had been since the opening minutes of the game. Marshall was able to regain its composure as Chantelle Handy hit all six free throw attempts in the final 22 seconds to ice the game. Tynikki Crook finished the game with 17 points while Alyssa Hammond had 16. Mystee Dale and Tania Walters scored ten apiece. Dale also contributed in other ways, leading all players with a career-high nine assists and seven rebounds. For Miami, Ashleigh Brown scored 17 points while Maggie Boyer had 14. With the win, Marshall will take on Pitt in the championship game of the tournament. The Herd and Panthers will square off at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt advanced to the championship game with a 63-56 win over Appalachian State earlier on Friday.
