Also, Marshall baseball updates from other players in collegiate wooden bat leagues

HUNTINGTON - Ian Kadish and Issac Ballou have been named to the Northwoods League All-Stars for 2010. The players will return to Marshall for the 2011 season after finishing play this summer in the collegiate wooden bat league, one of many hosting Marshall players this summer.
Kadish is pitching for the Rochester (Minn.) Honkers while Ballou is in the outfield for the Willmar Stingers in Wisconsin.
Kadish led Marshall in starts (15) and innings pitched (76.0) in the 2010 season. He finished 4-6 with a 7.11 earned run average.
Suffice it to say, Kadish is having a much better summer. He makes the all-star team on a 3-0 record for the Honkers. In 26.1 innings pitched, Kadish has allowed only six runs (four earned) and just 23 hits while striking out 26 and walking only five. He has an ERA of 1.37 and teams are only hitting .237 against him in the Northwoods League.

HUNTINGTON – Marshall softball head coach Shonda Stanton announced the hiring of the Thundering Herd’s new pitching coach Chelsey Barclay on Tuesday afternoon.
“I am really pleased to add Chelsey to our coaching staff,” said head coach Shonda Stanton. “Having competed in the Big 12, she knows the discipline it requires to be successful. She will be a great asset to our student-athletes and will push them to maximize their potential.”
Barclay joins the Herd after working a one-year stint as a graduate assistant pitching coach at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. While at ULM, she helped coach the Sun Belt Conference’s leading pitcher to a 1.55 ERA in Heather Fritz.
“We are really excited about our pitching staff and I am eager for Chelsey to begin working the team,” Stanton said.
Barclay also brings strong playing experience along with her, having pitched at Big 12 powerhouse Oklahoma State for two years. She graduated with a bachelors in elementary education in 2007.

From Woody Woodrum
and Greg Perry
Herd Insider magazine (goherd.com)

July 4, 1776-2010
HUNTINGTON - Happy Fourth of July weekend from the staff of the Herd Insider and goherd.com. We hope to see those in the Tri-State area at Harris Riverfront Park in Huntington on July 3rd for music by Sony recording artists Crisp & Davis and headliner James Otto, who scored a No. 1 with “I Just Started Loving You,” plus fireworks at dark. Cost is $5, but kids 12-and-under are free.
We hope these messages of freedom, hope and the founding of the United State of America will keep the reason for the holiday in your heads and, more importantly, in your hearts as well.
Thanks to the “Heroes” of the USA who put their lives on the line everyday to protect this freedom: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, National Guard, Coast Guard and, closer to home, Police, Firefighters and Paramedics. Thanks to you for all you do for us, as in US.
Happy Fourth of July to all and Happy Birthday, USA!

Pulaski, Va. - Marshall pitcher Ryan Kiel, taken in the 37th round by the Seattle Mariners, faired a bit better than his teammates in his initial pitching performance in professional baseball.
The Bluefield Orioles shutout the Pulaski Mariners Wednesday night in Pulaski, Virginia by the score of 14-0. Both teams are now 1-1 in the Appalachian League after the Mariners opened the season with a 8-4 win at home on Tuesday.
Kiel pitched two innings with no runs - the only Pulaski pitcher not to allow a run - plus two walks and three strikeouts.
The rest of the staff, four pitchers in all, allowed 19 hits, six doubles, a triple and a home run in the loss. Ramon Morla of Pulaski stayed hot by going 2-for-2 in the loss. He is now 6-for-6 to start the 2010 campaign.
Bluefield's Corey Thomas had three hits, including a three-run home run. He scored four times and stole a base. Brad Decatur, Michael Ohlman and Eiris Ramirez had three hits also in the rout.
